Parking Ticket Appeal
Should I pay the discounted amount or appeal?
If you have a real ground, appeal. For council PCNs in England, if you make an informal challenge within the discount period and it's rejected, councils usually re-offer the 50% discount, so you lose little by trying. Private parking companies vary - check the notice.
Is a private parking charge a fine?
No. It's a charge for breaching the car park's terms - a civil matter, not a criminal penalty. You can appeal to the operator and then to the independent appeals service they belong to (POPLA or IAS). Don't ignore court papers if they come.
What are the best grounds for a PCN appeal?
Unclear, missing or non-compliant signs and road markings; a valid exemption like loading/unloading or a Blue Badge; errors on the notice; a broken payment machine with no alternative; and in England, the 10-minute grace period after paid time ends. 'I was only a few minutes' alone rarely works.
What happens if my appeal is rejected?
For council PCNs, after formal representations you can appeal to the independent Traffic Penalty Tribunal (outside London) or London Tribunals within 28 days - it's free and you don't need a lawyer. For private charges, appeal to POPLA or IAS.
Do you handle US parking tickets?
Yes. US tickets are handled city by city; the letter uses the grounds that apply in most cities (signage, broken meters, ticket errors, permits) and tells you to check your city's deadline and process.
What does it cost?
Your first appeal letter each day is free. After that, $3 (charged in pounds or your local currency at checkout) buys one letter with 3 revisions - for example the tribunal version later.
