Try Finefightr

Finefightr drafts appeals from the information you give; it isn't legal advice and can't guarantee a ticket will be cancelled. Rules differ in England, Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland and between US cities - always check the deadline and process on your notice.

Who it's for

  • "I got a PCN for parking in a bay where the sign was hidden behind a tree."
  • "The car park machine wasn't working and the app didn't take my payment."
  • "A private company sent me a £100 'parking charge notice'. Do I have to pay?"
  • "I was unloading furniture for 10 minutes and got a ticket."
  • "I got a parking ticket in New York - is it worth contesting?"

Why people use Finefightr

Most parking tickets that are appealed properly get cancelled - but most people just pay, because the letters are intimidating, the deadlines are confusing and the '50% discount if you pay in 14 days' feels like the safe choice. And many appeals fail because they argue the wrong thing: 'I was only five minutes' instead of 'the sign didn't meet the legal requirements'. Finefightr asks what happened and what the ticket says, works out what kind of ticket it is (a council PCN, a private parking charge, or a US city citation) and which stage you're at, and builds the appeal on the grounds that actually cancel tickets: signage and road markings, exemptions like loading or Blue Badge, procedural errors on the notice, grace periods, broken machines, and mitigation where the authority has discretion. You get the letter, the evidence to attach, and the next step if they say no - including the independent tribunal or appeals service, where many motorists win.

  • ✓ Knows which ticket you have: UK council PCN, UK private parking charge, or US city citation
  • ✓ Builds the appeal on legal grounds: signs and lines, exemptions, procedural errors, grace periods, payment machine faults
  • ✓ Keeps the 50% discount where possible - informal challenges to councils usually pause it
  • ✓ Clear next steps and deadlines: formal representations, Traffic Penalty Tribunal / London Tribunals, POPLA or IAS, US hearings
  • ✓ Evidence checklist: photos of signs and bays, receipts, app records, Blue Badge, witness notes
  • ✓ Polite, factual letters - no ranting, no admissions you don't need to make

Frequently asked questions

Should I pay the discounted amount or appeal?

If you have a real ground, appeal. For council PCNs in England, if you make an informal challenge within the discount period and it's rejected, councils usually re-offer the 50% discount, so you lose little by trying. Private parking companies vary - check the notice.

Is a private parking charge a fine?

No. It's a charge for breaching the car park's terms - a civil matter, not a criminal penalty. You can appeal to the operator and then to the independent appeals service they belong to (POPLA or IAS). Don't ignore court papers if they come.

What are the best grounds for a PCN appeal?

Unclear, missing or non-compliant signs and road markings; a valid exemption like loading/unloading or a Blue Badge; errors on the notice; a broken payment machine with no alternative; and in England, the 10-minute grace period after paid time ends. 'I was only a few minutes' alone rarely works.

What happens if my appeal is rejected?

For council PCNs, after formal representations you can appeal to the independent Traffic Penalty Tribunal (outside London) or London Tribunals within 28 days - it's free and you don't need a lawyer. For private charges, appeal to POPLA or IAS.

Do you handle US parking tickets?

Yes. US tickets are handled city by city; the letter uses the grounds that apply in most cities (signage, broken meters, ticket errors, permits) and tells you to check your city's deadline and process.

What does it cost?

Your first appeal letter each day is free. After that, $3 (charged in pounds or your local currency at checkout) buys one letter with 3 revisions - for example the tribunal version later.
